About
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Every accomplished pianist was once someone searching for middle C. With encouragement, thoughtful guidance, and a love of learning, students from age three to one hundred and three can discover the joy of making music. At Carlin Clavier Studio, I strive to create a learning environment where students feel valued, inspired, and challenged. Every lesson is thoughtfully customized each week to meet the individual needs, learning style, and goals of each student. My mission is to cultivate musicians of excellence, creativity, and character by helping every student discover the unique musical gifts they have been given. I don’t simply teach students to play the piano—I teach them to think musically, practice purposefully, perform confidently, and discover the lifelong joy of creating beautiful music. While musical excellence is an important objective, my greatest desire is to help students become expressive musicians who use their gifts with confidence, gratitude, and generosity.
I believe every student has unique, God-given potential. My role is to help cultivate those gifts through patient instruction, meaningful challenges, and genuine encouragement. Along the way, students develop not only musical skills but also qualities that enrich every area of life—determination, perseverance, discipline, creativity, gratitude, confidence, and a heart for serving others through music.
Lessons are designed to build a strong musical foundation through:
Healthy posture and technique
Music reading and rhythmic fluency
Effective practice habits
Music theory and ear training
Musical expression and artistry
Performance preparation and stage confidence
Students of all ages are welcome. While our curriculum is rooted in the timeless foundations of classical piano, students are also encouraged to explore jazz, pop, composition, improvisation, and other musical styles as their interests and abilities grow. Throughout the year, students enjoy a wide variety of performance opportunities, including recitals, festivals, outreach concerts, competitions, and collaborative performances with other musicians and artists. These experiences help students gain confidence, develop poise, inspire creativity, and discover the joy of sharing music with others.
For students seeking additional challenges, preparation is available for ABRSM and TMA examinations, competitions, auditions, and college entrance requirements. These opportunities are carefully considered as part of each student’s individualized lesson plan. While I encourage students to set ambitious goals and experience the personal growth that comes from preparing music to a high standard, participation in competitions is always optional. Success is measured not only by awards or recognition, but by continual growth, artistic excellence, and a lifelong love of music.
In addition to private instruction, I also offer teacher coaching, competition preparation, and professional workshops designed to encourage and equip the next generation of music educators. Whether a student dreams of performing professionally or simply wants to fill a home with beautiful music, every lesson is an opportunity to cultivate excellence, creativity, and character while discovering the joy that music can bring for a lifetime.
