About

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Every accomplished pianist was once someone searching for middle C. With encouragement, thoughtful guidance, and a plan custom tailored to the student’s learning style, everyone from age three to one hundred and three can discover the joy of making music.

I provide a solid educational foundation to all students so can then choose whether they want to pursue music for enjoyment or as a serious career.

My Values:

Potential - Effort - Commitment - Customization - Giving Back - Perseverance

  • Every student has potential. Sparking enthusiasm so the student will discover their talents is my job.

  • Students, teacher, and parent work together in a collaborative effort to make progress that matches the student’s abilities.

  • Consistent commitment and follow through from teachers and students grows confidence.

  • Individualized pacing is based on a custom plan that changes as the student grows.

  • We are blessed when we share music with those who are home bound or on a long road to recovery.

  • Students can succeed at difficult things, and we find joy on the other side of the challenge.

At Carlin’s Clavier Studio, students’ ideas are valued, creativity is encouraged, and challenges become opportunities for growth. Each lesson is thoughtfully customized to the student’s needs, learning style, and goals each week. Beyond simply teaching piano, I strive to be a collaborative mentor who helps them to think musically, practice purposefully, perform confidently, and become poised, expressive musicians who share their gifts with gratitude and generosity.

Lessons are designed to build a strong musical foundation through:

  • Healthy posture, balance, and technique

  • Music reading and rhythmic fluency

  • Effective practice habits

  • Music theory and ear training

  • Musical expression and artistry

  • Performance preparation and stage confidence

  • Improvisation and composition

Students of all ages receive individualized, classically grounded instruction with opportunities to explore jazz, pop, composition, improvisation, and other musical styles. Recitals, festivals, outreach concerts, collaborations, and optional competitions help students develop confidence and artistry. Advanced coaching is also available for ABRSM and ASP examinations, auditions, competitions, and college auditions.

Through patient instruction, meaningful challenges, and encouragement, I help students cultivate their God-given gifts, strong character, and a lifelong love of music. Teacher coaching and professional workshops are also available.
