A quality lesson will consist of circle of 5ths work and a little bit of music theory each week. Technique is essential. We then work on music reading and pieces that are enjoyable to play. We often finish by polishing a piece for performance. Doing this well takes time, and anything less than an hour does not allow for comprehensive work.

Focus lessons aim to improve student's mastery of specific skills. We frequently offer lessons where we only work on rhythm, or note reading, working on memorization techniques and so much more. If you would like a focus lesson, you can request one or your teacher can recommend one for you. These are offered as specialized lessons but can also replace one of your regular weekly lessons.

Performance requires a higher level of commitment and preparation. This results in better practice, faster advancement, and the ability to play what sparks the student's interest more quickly.

Generally, I like to start lessons when children can concentrate on one thing for at least 5-7 minutes. I also like to assess their pre-reading and reading skills as readiness for lessons. Very tiny children, for example 4 and 5 year olds, may not be ready for a full hour lesson, but could gain a lot from 30 minutes of rapidly changing musical and piano related games and invitations to do creative things.

Students often have trouble remembering what or how to practice their exercises and pieces. Parents are essential in assisting with this. Parents can attend lessons, speak with me on a regular basis, and are encouraged to set up weekly performances at home, with the student playing for them one or two nights before their next lesson. Parents are also encouraged to oversee practice daily. Being present makes all the difference in the child's success.

Acoustic pianos that are well maintained offer a much different experience with touch, key and subsequent response from arm weight, and a much different experience with pedaling. A student is not able to achieve the same range of dynamics and musical colors with an electronic instrument.

This is an opportunity for students to play for other instructors and receive feedback without fully committing to a competition environment. Those who wish to receive a ranking can request one, and the most outstanding performances will be invited to play in the evening concert on the day of the festival.

An interview with the student / parent is required before initiating lessons. There is an 8 week nonrefundable trial period for all new students to ensure a good student : teacher fit. Students may start at the beginning of any calendar month. Students will need to provide the recommended books and supplies separately from the tuition costs. If needed, the teacher can purchase books and supplies for the student and request reimbursement. Lesson length is typically an hour unless the instructor recommends an alternative. Enrollment instructions will be given after the student is accepted following their interview.

The student & parent should notify the studio of their intent to stop lessons. They can discontinue lessons at the conclusion of the current calendar month. If the student chooses to stop lessons immediately, the tuition for the current month is nonrefundable.
